DEVELOPMENT SURFING

Some of the existing initiatives, projects and partner organisations we are involved with and support in making a difference in local communities.

CHRISTIAN SURFERS DURBAN

Christian Surfers Durban runs a surfing program every Saturday for Durban’s inner city and Bluff vulnerable street kids and youth at risk. Every Saturday, anywhere from 25-40 kids show up ready to learn, surf and be loved. They start the day off first with the word of God, they listen to a lesson on being environmentally responsible, and they close with a big group prayer. Once “Amen” is said, the kids grab their boards and sprint to the ocean where joyful chaos and the pure bliss of surfing ensues for hours. After surfing the kids all get a full lunch, for many, this may be their only meal of the day.

CHRISTIAN SURFERS CAPE TOWN

Our mission is to share the gospel, create a fun and safe environment to empower the youth of our local Happy Valley community, teach them about the ocean and make a positive impact in their lives and their communities through surfing, games and songs with Christ centered volunteers.

We want to give them the opportunity to experience and grow in the sport of surfing as God has given us the resources and skills for surfing and we want to share it with them.

We currently run the Happy Valley outreach program every second Saturday at Big Bay or out of Tableview United Church, if the weather doesn’t permit beach activities. We have between 15 and 20 kids between the ages of 5 and 16 years and we provide something to eat and drink after each day’s activities.

Christian Surfers Lamberts Bay

“Giving back to an impoverished community of Lamberts Bay by supporting Francious and Betina Engelbrecht, who work closely with the struggling kids within the community. They represent Christian Surfers in Lamberts Bay and mentor a large group of kids from the area using surfing.

Each contestant will be contributing their previously used wetsuits, boards, and non-perishable food items.

We reach out as local surfing development project, and run surf workshops to teach surfing and life skills”

Groundswell Aid

We are proud to partner with projects who incorporate surfing as a way to impact their community, whether on the islands of Mauritius and Indonesia, or the coastlines of Chile and South Africa, our projects are working to make a difference in the lives of those who need it most. We believe in asset-based community development and let the local contacts for our projects drive the way we support them. This includes service trips, providing surfing equipment, promoting locally made goods, and financial assistance for specific one-time costs.

Aleph Surf

Our purpose is to give youth & their families from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to experience the impossible – whether it’s surfing, art, education, or a job. We want our Aleph family to be acknowledged, empowered, and loved for who they are and in turn, to do the same for others. We create opportunities, not handouts.’

9 Miles Project

9Miles Project has a few social enterprises that assist in generating funds to sustain our daily operational activities, and also to create employment and empowerment within our communities. We use surfing as a catalyst to attract at-risk youth to a recreational sport which requires dedication, commitment, perseverance, and discipline.
